Nurture Shock

Nurture Shock book review

NURTURE SHOCK by Po Bronson & Ashley Merryman

A series of easy-to-understand essays that serve as a hotlist on how to raise your kids. They take assumptions we make about various child-rearing issues and use the findings in various scientific studies to show us how we doing the exact opposite of what we should be doing. It’s eye-opening. My favorite chapters are “Why White Parents Don’t Talk About Race?” and “The Lost Hour.” (The punchline of these two chapters — openly refer to someone’s skin color & don’t let you kids stay up late on Saturday night.) “Why Kids Lie” and “The Science of Teen Rebellion” has me already plotting for the complicated years ahead.

Great reading for short spurts.
